City News Posted on March 27, 2024

On Tuesday, March 26th the Liberal City Commission addressed the following items during their regularly scheduled meeting:

Consent Agenda items (cereal malt beverage license, and airport lease) were approved by the Commission.

The Commission next reviewed and approved the recommendation of the Liberal Metropolitan Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals to appoint Jeremy Benton to an open seat on their board.

Commissioners approved the Planning and Zoning board’s recommendation to approve the final plat of the Alco Addition replat, which would split the current plat into three separate lots to reflect the current property ownership of this land. The area is located between 14th Street and E. 15th Street between N. Kansas Ave and N. New York Ave.

The Commission also approved the Planning and Zoning board’s recommendation to approve the preliminary and final plats of the Doll Holiday Estates addition, located near U.S. Highway 83 south of Charles Street. This replat will change street layouts and allow for housing subdivision development to proceed.

Commissioners voted to approve Resolution No. 2412 calling for the abatement of environmental violations for a residential property located in the 1500 block of N. Calhoun following concerns voiced by the surrounding neighborhood. The resolution allows the property owner 15 days to make cleanup progress before either granting an extension to continue cleanup or abating the property at the property owner’s cost.

The Commission reviewed a comprehensive insurance renewal policy presented by Al Shank Insurance, Inc. After reviewing premium costs, changing building valuations, and additional coverage for new projects, the commission voted to approve the insurance renewal as presented.

Commissioners heard a request and voted to approve the purchase of a Bobcat skid steer for the street department.  The skid steer will replace aging equipment which will be retained to use for replacement parts.

The Commissioners also reviewed and approved the bid from B & H Paving, Inc. to perform the 2024 street chip seal project to maintain city roadways in Northeast Liberal and portions of Western Avenue from 15th Street to U.S. Highway 54. The project was approved not to exceed $520,000, paid from the Special Highway Fund account.

The next regularly scheduled Liberal City Commission meeting will take place April 9th at 5:30 p.m.
